Photo of the Week for October 16, 2015
The morning sky is a hotbed of activity right now with interesting pairings of several bright planets and, occasionally, the Moon. You can keep tabs on the action by checking our regular This Week’s Sky and Alan Dyer’s “Exploring the Night Sky” column, which appears in each issue of SkyNews.
Observing from Westwood, Ontario, Gerhard Salhenegger captured this view of the earthlit crescent Moon and Mercury at 6:27 a.m., EDT, on October 11. “I was inspired by the excellent graphics in SkyNews to go outside and see the real thing,” he says. “I’m also thankful that astronomers can predict these events so precisely!”
Salhenegger used a Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera fitted with a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens for this 2.5-second exposure at f/5.6 and ISO 800.
