Photo of the Week for April 21, 2017
Calgary, Alberta, astrophotographer Darren Foltinek sent us this wonderful mosaic, captured in May, 2016. The image takes in approximately 60 degrees of sky on its vertical axis and includes a stretch of Milky Way from Scorpius north to Vulpecula. “While on a month-long road trip through the U.S. southwest,” Darren writes, “my friend and I camped on Gooseberry Mesa, between Zion National Park and St. George, Utah. The days were spent riding the fantastic mountain biking trails and enjoying spectacular desert vistas. At night, I photographed the stunningly dark sky.”
Darren’s Milky Way picture is a composite of 25 individual frames captured with a Canon EOS 6D DSLR camera and 50mm lens riding on an AstroTrac motorized tracking mount.
