Without doubt, the most dramatic nightscape images usually include a strong auroral display. But that’s just one ingredient—albeit a very helpful one. Careful composition that balances all the visual components, and a location that offers striking scenery are also important considerations. This September 11, 2018, photo captured in Kananaskis, Alberta, by John Andersen combines all these elements.

John recorded this scene with a Canon EOS 6D DSLR camera fitted with a Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 zoom lens (set to 15mm) for this 10-second exposure at ISO 3200.
